Executive Summary
A significant environmental, health, and economic issue in Ghana is illegal smallscale mining, sometimes referred to as “galamsey,” a phrase derived from “gather and sell”.
Recent public outcry over this social scourge has led to demonstrations and media attention due to its rapid destruction of waterbodies, degrading land, impact on food and water security, health, international trade, and national security.
Against this background, Greenlead in collaboration with the Institute for Development-Ghana (ID-Ghana), and the Center for Environment, Natural Resources and Sustainability (CENS Africa) put together this deliberative workshop in September 2024 to consider diverse perspectives and chart a way forward.
This workshop, moderated by Miss Mercedes Asamani, had the support of panelists from academia, government, media, civil society organizations, industry, ‘galamseyers’, young environmental activists, and members of the general public. A special mention to Mr. Clement Abaidoo, Mr. Edem Srem-Sai, Dr. Fatima Eshun, Hon. Adomako Kissi, Dr. Kojo Ahiakpa, Ing. Wisdom Edem Gomashie (PgGhIE), and Mr. Daniel Afari.
